Frequently Asked Questions

A behavior-focused group home is a residential setting designed to provide specialized care for individuals with developmental disabilities, mental health challenges, or behavioral needs. It offers structured environments and interventions to help individuals manage and reduce challenging behaviors, such as aggression, self-injury, or disruptive actions, while supporting their overall development and well-being.

Our group home is equipped to support individuals who display behaviors such as:

  • Self-injury (e.g., head banging, hand biting)
  • Aggression towards others (e.g., hitting, biting, throwing objects)
  • Destruction of property
  • Life-threatening behaviors (e.g., excessive eating, vomiting, refusal to eat)
  • Inappropriate sexual behaviors or vulnerability to sexual exploitation
  • Behaviors leading to the use of restraints or emergency psychiatric interventions (e.g., Baker Act) These behaviors are managed through personalized treatment plans and behavioral interventions.

At Guions Professional Services, each resident receives a personalized behavior plan by our Board Certified Behavior Analyst, developed in collaboration with caregivers, family members, and other professionals. The plan is based on their unique needs, behaviors, and goals, ensuring that interventions are targeted and effective.

Our group home employs trained and experienced staff, including certified behavior analysts, licensed professionals, and direct support workers who specialize in managing challenging behaviors. Staff are also trained in crisis management, de-escalation techniques, and the use of positive behavioral interventions.

Residents participate in daily routines designed to promote skill-building, independence, and socialization. Activities may include life skills training, vocational training, recreational activities, and behavioral therapy sessions, tailored to each individual’s abilities and goals.

The staff-to-resident ratio varies based on the individual needs of the residents, ensuring that each person receives the attention and care they require. We aim to provide sufficient staff to maintain safety, support behavioral interventions, and foster a nurturing environment.

In the event of a behavioral emergency, our trained staff follow protocols that include the use of de-escalation techniques and, if necessary, the use of physical interventions (such as restraint) only when absolutely necessary for safety. We also work closely with medical professionals to manage health-related emergencies and provide immediate care when needed.

Yes, family involvement is highly encouraged. We believe that family members play a crucial role in the care and support of their loved one. Regular communication between families, caregivers, and other professionals ensures that everyone is aligned on goals and progress.

 The process typically includes:

  • We MUST receive a referral packet from you Waiver Support Coordinator or the Agency for Persons With Disabilities.
  • An initial assessment of the individual's needs and behaviors
  • A review of potential group homes based on the individual’s specific requirements
  • A meeting with our team to discuss the care plan and placement options
  • A tour of the facility and introduction to staff
  • Ongoing support to ensure a smooth transition and successful integration
