Yes, but safeguards must be in place to ensure payment is made only for specific services rendered. Approval from the APD regional office is required, and documentation must be maintained by both the provider and the Waiver Support Coordinator (WSC).

5. Can a Licensed Nurse Provide Respite Care?

Yes, if the recipient has complex medical needs requiring skilled nursing care. In such cases, a licensed practical nurse (LPN) may provide respite services with a physician’s, ARNP’s, or PA’s prescription for skilled respite care.

Relatives who do not live with the recipient and are enrolled as Medicaid waiver providers can offer respite care and receive reimbursement under specific conditions.

Respite care must be included in the recipient’s support plan and approved by the APD regional office. If a relative is providing care, proper justification and documentation are required for approval.
